Why use it

Driftwood creates natural scapes, gives fish hiding spots, and releases tannins that gently lower pH and have mild antibacterial benefits — ideal for soft-water fish like tetras and bettas.

Tannins and tea-colored water

New driftwood leaches tannins that tint the water like weak tea. It's harmless (many fish love it), but to reduce it, soak or boil the wood first and run activated carbon.

Prep and sinking

Boil or soak new wood for a few days until it sinks and stops clouding the water. Some plecos need driftwood to rasp on as part of their diet.
