New Tank Syndrome: Why New Tanks Kill Fish

An uncycled tank can't process fish waste.

What's happening

In a brand-new tank, the beneficial bacteria that detoxify ammonia and nitrite haven't grown yet. Fish waste builds up to toxic levels โ€” that's 'new tank syndrome,' and it's the top reason beginner fish die.

The fix: cycle first

Cycle the tank before adding a full fish load (see our nitrogen cycle guide). If you already have fish, do daily 25โ€“50% water changes and test ammonia and nitrite until both stay at zero.

Be patient

A tank takes 3โ€“6 weeks to establish. Add fish slowly, a few at a time, so the bacteria can keep up with the rising waste load.

FAQ

How do I fix new tank syndrome?
Large, frequent water changes to keep ammonia and nitrite near zero while the tank cycles, plus a bottled bacteria starter to speed up the colony. Stop adding fish until it's stable.
