Start with easy plants

Java fern, anubias, and cryptocoryne thrive in low light and don't need CO2 or special substrate — tie or wedge them in and they grow. They're nearly impossible to kill.

Light and nutrients

Even easy plants need a basic plant light on a timer (6–8 hours) and an occasional liquid fertilizer. More demanding carpeting plants need stronger light and CO2 injection.

Plants fight algae

Healthy plants consume the same nutrients algae craves, so a well-planted tank often has less algae. They also shelter fish and boost water quality — a win all around.

FAQ

Do I need CO2 for a planted tank?
No — low-light plants like java fern, anubias, and crypts grow fine without it. CO2 is only needed for demanding, high-light carpets and fast growth.
