Recognize it

Ich (white spot disease) shows as tiny white grains, like salt, scattered on fins and body, plus flashing (rubbing on surfaces). It spreads fast in stressed fish.

Raise temperature + treat

Slowly raise the temperature to about 80°F to speed the parasite's life cycle, and treat with an ich medication or aquarium salt per the label. The parasite is only vulnerable in its free-swimming stage, so continue treatment several days past the last visible spot.

Fix the stressor

Ich usually takes hold when fish are stressed by poor water quality or a chill. Test your water, do water changes, and fix the underlying cause so it doesn't return.

FAQ

How long does ich take to cure?
Usually 1–2 weeks. Keep treating for several days after the last white spot disappears, because the parasite is only killable during its free-swimming phase.
